Experimental and ultimately geared more towards atmosphere than anything else, the band take the Isis and Neurosis playbook and run with it. But rather than follow it adnauseum, they ignore the calligraphy-styled work of the past two bands and instead add in their own aggressive manic scrawls. Indeed, with constant screams, meaty distortion and many a chugging detuned riff, Unfold are bent on destruction more than mind expansion.
Taken at face value, this makes for an enjoyable listen as many of the bands doing this particular style have mellowed as of late. But that is somewhat contradictory as well when considering that this album is already two years old and shouldn’t be held accountable against the current climate. Regardless, with a few Meshuggah-like complexities explored and many a monolithic passage endured, Unfold’s considerable tardiness to American stores doesn’t stop them from making a grand entrance – even if the door had already been bashed in before.
