WRECK OF THE HESPERUS – light rotting out

The woeful second album, for so long dreaded by many, from the Irish grime-bandits Wreck of the Hesperus. Crawling out from their grim festering underground caverns after five years – this new monstrosity shows they have, unsurprisingly, learnt nothing since the pitiful noise of “The Sunken Threshold” in 2006. “Light Rotting Out” is a regressive degenerate musical abomination of fetid, retarded doom. Dirty dissonance from demented dissidents. Guest vocals from Albert Witchfinder.

Have you ever heard something that made you like this? (Click on “this”). This is one of those records. Wreck of the Hesperus are an Irish band practicing something between Sludge and Funeral Doom Metal. ‘Light Rotting Out’, their second full-length album has, as the first one, three long tracks lasting for forty minutes.
The first thing that I’ve noticed in ‘Light Rotting Out’ was the production. The production is very different from previous works, this time it’s cleaner. On previous works the atmosphere was pretty dark and insane but I thought sometimes, because of the raw production, the sound didn’t really added anything to the record and in fact I thought that that sound was getting in the way of the WOH’s destructive sound and the listener. Sometimes it was hard to me, listener, to actually realize what was going on. In this new record it’s much more different, but calm down… I’m not saying the production in here is crystal clear like a progressive metal record. No, if it was, the ambiance would have been ruined by it. The fact that the production is cleaner makes the instruments sound more “important” and we can really appreciate what’s beeing played. Despite a cleaner production, I think this record is the most cold work of all their works. When I listen to ‘Light Rotting Out’ I get maddly thirsty. This record is very… dry. Despite the obvious darkness and insanity surrounding the music, there’s really no emotion being let out of this thing. It’s almost painful to listen to it.
The riffs are sludgier than before… they drag themselves in these anti-melodies and really slow riffs. The drums are absolutly awesome in this record, they sound like echoes and they are intense.
In the last and longest track ‘The Holy Rheum’, which is devided in two pieces, being the second (‘II. Hologram Law’) my favorite, we can hear a saxophone. That’s really great. In this final track there’s a guest vocalist too: Albert Witchfinder of Spiritus Mortis and Reverend Bizarre.
